More Family Stories:
Sequel to "Giving Up Stealing For Lent
Written by Brother Charles Madden, OFM CONV. who resided at Marytown.
It has been eight years since I wrote "Giving Up Stealing for Lent!" and since then five of my brothers and sisters have died. This past summer my nephew John Madden insistently encouraged me to write down more of the stories of our family. At first I demurred but upon reflection realized that he was right.
He pointed out that many of the stories would eventually be lost and the upcoming generations would be deprived of precious family lore unless I put pen to paper soon. I figured I would have a dozen or so so stories to write but to my amazement I soon realized I would have three times that number.
As before many are funny incidents, but mixed in as well are other stories that bring out, sometimes painfully, God's mysterious way of kicking our lives arse over kittle, so to speak. Sometimes we get glimpses of the why and how of things that God allows in our lives, yet others will never be revealed to us this side of eternity. Through all of life we must keep faith with God, trusting that He knows what is best for us over the long haul. Though these stories are centered on the Madden family, no family is an isolated entity. There are grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and in-laws, a veritable rainbow of interlocking families.
