Footnotes

This series of catechisms incorporates the worthwhile advances in psychology and pedagogy, as urged by the Vatican Council II. It rejects the aims of extreme geneticists. social engineers and educators who consider the individual only in the perspective of community living. We are concerned with the individual as a person, who is by nature a component of society.
The basic principle of these religion books is the Catholic premise: Salvation is primarily and ultimately an individual work, under the guidance and help of the Catholic Church. This is the message of our Savior, that the Last Judgement will depend on personal merit or demerit.
Definite official teachings of our faith must be presented for the inspiration and safe travel of our children to eternal salvation. Pope Paul VI noted this when he said in 1967, opening the first Synod of Bishops; "Faith, ... is not...acquiescence in the philosophical or sociological trends of passing historical moment... faith is... principally certainty."
The defined Catholic truths are unchangeable. There can be no accommodation. For Christian civilization to endure, each age has to be related to these certainties for correct thinking and virtuous living. When our Lord commissioned His disciples to teach all nations, He said: "Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you."
Accordingly, in this catechism we make no concessions to the current consensus or situation ethics determination of truth and morality. In every lesson we include approved Questions and Answers. All contain the doctrine professed in The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Those recommended for memorizing are marked with an asterisk before them.
