Three of the candles are purple to represent penance and longing; they are lit during the first, second, and fourth weeks. One of the candles is rose-colored to symbolize joy; it is lit during the third week in glad anticipation of the birth of Jesus. And the fifth candle, to be lit on Christmas day, is white.
